Croup is a common respiratory illness that has been recognized for many years. Despite recent advances in the utilization of steroids to treat the condition, it remains a significant cause of morbidity in children. In the developing world it may also remain a significant cause of mortality. Despite comprehensive descriptions of the disease process, its aetiological agents and clinical course, there are very few descriptions of the mechanics of breathing in croup.
