| spelling | oai:open.uct.ac.za:11427/10345 Representations of Elizabeth I De Klerk, Emily Marx, Lesley English Bibliography: leaves 80-82. In this dissertation I have sought to examine some contemporary representations of Elizabeth I. Beginning with an outline of how the queen struggled to construct her feminine power within and beyond dominant patriarchal discourse, I go on to explore closely three modern filmic treatments of the queen: The Virgin Queen (1955), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) and Elizabeth (1998). These films are discussed in terms of their engagement with Elizabeth's iconography and mythic biography, and in terms of the anxieties reproduced as a consequence of their grounding in particular historical eras. 2014-12-28T14:45:43Z 2014-12-28T14:45:43Z 2000 Master Thesis Masters MA http://hdl.handle.net/11427/10345 eng application/pdf Department of English Language and Literature Faculty of Humanities University of Cape Town |
