This longitudinal, qualitative case study provides thick description of six English second-language (ESL) students' transition from Social Science disciplines to postgraduate study in the professional disciplines of Law and Marketing at a South African university. The study has two main objectives. Firstly, it aims to understand the ways in which the students perceive the literacy practices they bring to their new disciplines and how these contribute to their challenges with writing and with reconciling past and emerging disciplinary identities.
