| description | The Republic of Botswana was formerly the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland and subsequently adopted its present name upon independence in 1966. The country has had four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment creating one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. Mineral extraction, principally diamond mining, dominates economic activity, though the tourism sector is growing in leaps and bounds possibly due to the country's conservation practices and extensive nature preserves. By the end of 2003, Botswana had the world's highest known rate of HIV/AIDS infection but also one of Africa's most progressive and comprehensive programs for dealing with the disease. |
