The Southern Ocean is the name given to the oceanic region that surrounds the entire Antarctic continent. It comprises the southern extents of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. The Antarctic continent forms the southern boundary of the Southern Ocean, while the northern border is not physiographically fixed, but is usually considered to coincide with the geographic location of the Subtropical Convergence (STC) (Lutjeharms 1985).
